'The King's Barbers' A Capella Group Perform at Lunchtime Concert

Body

The St John's community was treated to an incredibly special informal lunchtime concert when renowned a capella group, 'The King's Barbers', from King's Ely performed a repertoire of their songs. Our Senior House Chamber Choir performed a 3-part arrangement of 'The Wellerman', a shanty which has seen renewed popularity in recent years.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome back The King's Barbers from King's Ely. This excellent, long-established group of 14 singers performed barber-shop classics and other repertoire, bringing joy and first-class entertainment to our audience of pupils, parents and staff.

.'The King's Barbers' are a boys a capella group from King's Ely whose members are all former cathedral or college choir choristers. It was a particularly proud moment when St John's staff and pupils watched three of our alumni sing and whose obvious musical talents have continued to go from strength to strength.

The boys were asked what they enjoyed the most about being part of this group, with answers including: 'The sense of community', 'The range of non-choral music', to the more amusing, 'Our weekly Oreos if we and 'Not having to keep a straight face when performing!'.

Our Chamber Choir kick-started the concert with 'The King's Barbers' following on with tracks such as, 'Hallelujah', 'Viva La Vida', a special surprise serenade for none other than Mr Chippington our Head and some rather realistic Chewbacca impressions during their Star Wars song. The community-minded group showcased their generosity by raising £400 for charity during their recent Valentine’s concert.
