One of St John’s College School’s pupils, Andrew Knight, has qualified for the British National Dance Championship Finals this November in both the Ballroom and Latin solo section. Andrew, aged 10, amongst approximately 200 other competitors, danced the Quickstep (Ballroom) and the Cha Cha Cha (Latin) in the regional rounds to qualify for the finals at the prestigious Blackpool Tower Ballroom.
Andrew started dancing from an early age; he particularly loves tap and ballroom but also attends ballet classes. His favourite dance memory is “dancing as a springbok as part of a dance recital for our boys’ ballet group”. Andrew attends the ‘Colours of Dance’ dance school in Histon Road, Cambridge (www.coloursofdance.com) run by his mother, Imogen Knight, who explains: “His brother also dances and they are asked regularly if they’d like to stop, but they love it and do as much as they can fit in, so I end up being a dance mum too, which is really fun - and enlightening!”
Andrew currently dances for around 2 ½ hours a week but will have a lot of practice to do before November and will enter a few more competitions between now and then to make sure he is as happy and confident as he can be in the Tower Ballroom. Andrew commented, “My teacher Chrissie is excited and proud too, as I am her first Blackpool Finalist so she will be accompanying me to Blackpool to dance with me.”
