Following the success of last year’s Scheherazade, Form 4 put on an exceptional performance of Fantastic Mr Fox which contained moments of humour and suspense, paired with the ridiculous throughout the story. The theme of ‘playfulness’ was at the centre of the production, shown with moments of comedy chases and the humorous demise of the three nasty farmers, Boggis, Bunce and Bean.
The audience was transported into the whimsical world of the eponymous Mr Fox who is known for his quick wit and cunning nature. The three children who played this character all emphasised both his charisma and charm, as well as his adventurous spirit.
The renowned Roald Dahl classic was split into three parts with each class handling a different section of the play. Whilst the story is well-known, the play was technically challenging both in linguistic and performing terms, especially as it was acted both 'in the round' and on the main stage requiring Form 4 to captivate the attention of the audience from all sides. The children did this with confidence, demonstrating great skill, as well as effort from each cast member. The nature of the play demanded that the children were constantly 'switched on' and thinking ahead to their particular moments.
What stood out was the seamless interaction between the characters. The cast worked in harmony as a connected ensemble, their chemistry palpable as they navigated the twists and turns of the story.
The use of movement and expression made the play both visually engaging and incredibly funny, as well as being effective devices for connecting the story in a seamless manner. There were elements of farce and slapstick comedy that were finely executed and ensured that the audience was kept captivated throughout.
The wonderful costumes and use of effective makeup added a further touch of authenticity and charisma to proceedings and transported the audience to the underground world of the story.
