Form 1 Play 'Roman Britain Rewritten'

Body

Form 1 recently took the stage with their original production, 'Roman Britain Rewritten.' This engaging and energetic play was a collaborative effort, written by the Form 1 class and their drama teacher, with contributions from the Byron House music teacher and choreography from our specialist dance teacher.

I loved the show and smiled through the whole thing. I also particularly loved how the children's energy was channelled through some complex scenes....so incredibly effective and so much enjoyed by all.

The production tied directly into the children's studies of the Romans and Celts. Form 1 drew upon their hands-on experience from the previous term’s Roman Day workshop. Each class took responsibility for performing a different section of the play, enhancing the experience with class songs and choreographed dance moves.

I have been massively impressed by Form 1 and it has been a great pleasure to be a part of it at the end of the process. The quality of their performance has been first-class throughout. Bravo!

The unique 'in the round' staging allowed the audience to sit on all sides of the performance space. This setup enabled the children to enter and exit through the audience, creating a more intimate and engaging experience. At various points, all three classes were simultaneously performing, either on the main stage or facing each other on the floor. The battle scenes, in particular, showcased impressive choreography for their age group.

Thank you so much for such an uplifting performance. There was such wonderful energy and confidence and fantastic storytelling.

The play depicted events from Emperor Claudius’ invasion of Celtic Britain to Boudicca’s revolt. Originating from discussions in History lessons, this curriculum-inspired play served to consolidate the children's learning through performance.

Inspired by Brechtian theatre techniques, the production kept the audience aware they were watching a performance, preventing escapism. This self-awareness was achieved by having cast members play multiple roles, from Romans to Celts and even Roman Emperors. Costume changes and props within the audience’s view ensured clarity in character transitions.

Form 1's 'Roman Britain Rewritten' stands as a testament to the children's hard work, creativity, and ability to bring history to life on stage.
